2013 Cost vs. Value Report

Remodeling Magazines Cost vs. Value report for 2013 recently came out.

Lets take a look at the numbers.
 The left hand column is the data for the SF Bay area region and the right is the national averages.

 Okay, so no big surprise the SF Bay area is more expensive than the national average. Hurray!!!

 

Midrange

For the midrange work the best return is for a steel entry door replacement? Why that is, I have no idea.

The worst return for midrange work is a sunroom addition...guess that would be a bad investment
according to this data.

 

High End

For high end the best return is for fiber cement siding replacement...sexy.
The worst return for the high end is for a master suite addition...this surprises me as I would think
that high end type folks would want/demand a master suite?

 

Can You Believe Any Of This?

When I talk to pros about these numbers they all seem to get a little twitchy.
They sorta act like, 'Hey no peeking behind the curtain.'

I think it makes them nervous that consumers can have this info to judge their bids against.

The pros all want to say that those numbers are too low?
I guess y'all will have to judge for yourselves.

I do like the fact the real wood decks have a better return than fake wood.

I also like the fact that our basement remodel will supposedly return 87.8% with a job cost of $73,350.

Since we're going to spend about a quarter of that does that mean we will make money when we sell the house?
Oh yea, we're never selling this place.....
